Should I have a loft conversion?

We know we should be here telling you all the reasons why you should have a loft conversion, but we also want you to have made a really informed decision before you make the leap to transform your home. So what are the things you should bear in mind? 

Aligning estimates and reality 

While you will get estimates for your work – and it’s worth shopping around to find the right price, the right people, with the right insurances – not everything will always go to plan. It’s worth getting your numbers together and then adding 25% to the money you have put aside. 

You won’t agree on everything

For any couple who has gone camping and felt lucky to be together after the tent is up, (which is everyone, right?) you will understand that you will argue. What are the chances that you will agree on the window types, the decorative style or the placement of the storage? The financial outlay will also place some strain on your relationship, so consider how you approach each decision. 

You’ll lose some privacy

You’ll not only have people in your house changing your home, you will also have a big hole in the area that they are working in, so you may feel exposed in a number of ways. Of course, good loft conversion companies and workers will do everything they can to reduce any uncomfortable feelings that may occur and speed up the process, but there will be some things that can’t be avoided.

You’ll lose that storage space 

Chances are there are a fair few items in your loft and they will need to go somewhere. Unless you opt for a storage facility, those items will need to be stored elsewhere in your home, so you may find that you feel a bit cluttered for a while, with your Christmas decorations in your bedroom in June… 

It will be all you talk about

With such a huge project going on, you could be forgiven for it being your main point of conversation, but try to mix it up a little bit – it will be more interesting to you than anyone else!  

Your neighbours won’t be your biggest fans

From the vans down the street to the noise, your neighbours will be putting up with a bit of disruption while you work on improving your home. You’ll have to swap them a tour of your loft conversion after you’ve finished – which will be a nice close to the chapter of it being all you can talk about.
