Making the most of an alcove
When you convert your loft, you are likely to have some spaces which are an unconventional shape, compared to the rest of your home.
Alcoves can seem like a space you never wanted or needed, but with a little creativity, they can be a part of your home that makes it unique and crafted to meet your needs. Making the most of the unconventional is part of the of a loft conversion and can involve some out-of-the-ordinary design and thinking.
No matter what type of room you will be creating from your loft conversion space, alcoves can offer great storage space options or cozy seating areas.
Before you do anything, you need to check for pipes or cables, as you don’t want to drill through those. You can do this by running a Bosch PMD 10 over the area, and then you can establish where is safe
Once you know where you can drill, you can set up shelving areas or fix a folding desktop, to create an office area. Many of the best alcove spaces are created through custom built items, so you can get something built in. Whatever room you have decided to create, it’s worth engaging with a carpenter to work with you on design and installation on a bespoke unit – completely created to your needs.
If not functional, alcoves can create a great feature space. This could mean adding a pop of colour or creating a different design with wallpaper; the patterned paper could go either side of the alcove, with the alcove itself a blank space, or the inverse – blank walls either side of a patterned wallpaper alcove. if you’re going for a Scandi look, you could even add a pile of logs as a focal point.
It’s best to go with the shape of your alcove, accentuating its shape and working with its dimensions. If it is slimline, add slimline furniture like a freestanding wardrobe, cabinet or bookcase.
The roof can be the guiding line of design and division, giving your room a focal point as well as a guide for division and where furniture could be placed, following the flow of the room.
Alcoves are often referred to as nooks, and what word goes better with nook than reading? If you are looking for storage for your books or a place to relax and read, then what could be better than a little library or reading nook? With floating shelves, you could place your books to follow the height of the room, while either leaving a space for a chair at the bottom, or building in a seating area to the alcove space.
