Gable, Mansard and L-shaped loft conversions
In the last blog we started to delve into different terminology used with loft conversions, and the different types available – starting with dormer and roof light loft conversions.
So what else is available? Once again, whichever type of loft conversion you choose should be led by how you would like to improve your home, along with your budget, but it’s good to have an idea of what you are looking for.
L-shaped conversions
Now this a loft conversion which can create an amazing amount of space along with headroom, but does rely on there being an existing rear extension. In terms of how the conversion is built, two dormers connect to create one dormer – one built into the original roof, and the other into the extension roof. Because of the shape, this conversion can also bring the option to create multiple rooms.
Hip to gable loft conversion
Only suitable for properties with a free sloping side roof, hip-to-gable loft conversions create lots of space through extending the sloping hip up and out. This creates a gable side wall, and it’s usually built with a rear dormer to increase the available space.
It’s ideal for detached properties and would suit accommodate any type of room.
Extra planning permission may need to be sought if you have already added a rear extension or conservatory to your property.
Mansard loft conversion
This is a bigger job, which changes the entire shape of a roof, making it almost vertical in structure. Because the amount of work involved is on the grander side, this is not a conversion which will fit all budget types, but it is suitable for most types of property, adding a significant amount of space. The work involved also means that it may be necessary to consult a structural engineer to check your property can take the strain.
If you have seen extensions in terraced homes in London, then they have more than likely been a Mansard. You will have noticed that bricks are used to try to blend with the existing property, with a finish of tiles or slates. Because there is the opportunity for the property to stay in keeping with the design of those around it, while it will be necessary to seek planning permission, the design can be easier to get through.
Adding the extra floor can allow you to create a room which is flooded with light, and create a space which is completely versatile. Because the space can be so large and bring a range of options, this is a real life changing conversion, allowing you to enjoy your home in completely your own way.
