Decluttering to prepare for a loft conversion

If you are converting your loft then it’s the ideal opportunity to declutter your space.

But while you’re working out what type of room you would like, where the windows will go and what furniture you would like up there, you may not feel like you have time for decluttering as well, so we thought we would give you some prompts to make the process easier… 

Safety first

You will need to get things out of your loft so that the conversion work can begin, so you might as well bring things down while you are decluttering. Generally, this is not a one-person job, especially as you may be dealing with a ladder up to the loft at the moment. Ask for help to get things out of your loft, and if you’re comfortable, keep that help for when you are working out what stays and what goes. 

Easy does it

Chances are your loft may not be full of only your stuff but things you have inherited, and if you have children then it may be that you have everything from when they were a baby onwards. And then, of course, there’s the Christmas decorations and maybe a seasonal wardrobe. Don’t try to take on everything all at once – after all, where would you store it all? 

Decide where you will rehome items

Will you be moving items to a different part of your home, sending things to a charity shop or tackling Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Vinted? Or will you simply be getting those children round to take their stuff to their own home? It’s best to have a designated space for each item’s eventual final destination from the start, so you don’t get confused down the road. 

Don’t delay decluttering

If you can be ruthless then there’s no time like the present as it gives you less time to be sentimental and find reasons why you need to hold on to that scarf you had when you were at school… 

Will things be heading back to the loft?

Chances are that your loft space will still need to store some of the things that have come out of the space. If so, this is a great time to work out your storage options and ensure that you have the right size furniture and space to accommodate everything. 

Remember that your loft space will be changing

While you may still be using some of your loft space for storage, the emphasis here is some. Going forward, you’ll need to remember that your option to just pop it upstairs and out of the way has gone, so you’ll need to keep that in mind for future purchase decisions.
